BERLIN – Germany is returning 75 historical artefacts to Mexico. With one exception, the artefacts were previously kept in the Salder Castle Museum in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, according to the Mexican embassy in Berlin. Another was found by customs in Leipzig.

The cultural artefacts were mainly human- and animal-like objects made of clay in the style of the Huaxtecs. They included seals, vessels and jewellery. According to the information, they come from the eastern Gulf coast of the Latin American country and are dated to the period between 300 and 1500 AD.

The objects arrived in Salzgitter around 1900, according to the city’s website.

A representative of the German Foreign Office as well as Social Democratic member of parliament Dunja Kreiser and the Mexican ambassador Francisco Quiroga have been invited to the official restitution ceremony at the Mexican embassy on Thursday.

For some years now, Mexico’s cultural authorities have been increasingly committed to protecting the Latin American country’s cultural heritage abroad.

As recently as March, 40 artefacts were returned to Mexico, including a stone head from the Olmec culture.
