Have you ever wondered why of all the states in Nigeria, only Ekiti towns have the “-Ekiti” suffix?

This video explores the origin of the Ekiti people. Yes, they were once a People before they were politicised into a state. I showed how the people are related to Oduduwa, the ancestor of the Yoruba Race and touched a bit on the Ekiti Parapo W@r of 1877.

The Ekiti people have their peculiar native dance. Watch to the end to see the demonstration of the Ekiti native dance and my rendition of the state’s anthem. Again, yes, the Ekiti people have an anthem.

  1. Great video, I enjoyed the quick history of Ekiti. Just wanted to say that there are Ekiti people that are not presently in Ekiti state. There are Ekiti people in Oǹdó state and Kwara state. For example the towns Ìgbàrà-Òkè, Isarun, Ilara-Mokin, Ikota, and Àkúrẹ́ in Oǹdó State are Ekiti towns. Àkúrẹ́ is also an Ekiti settlement (Àkúrẹ́ dialect is a subdialect of the Ekiti dialect). Ìn ṣeun èye mi o.

  2. Thank you. This was a lovely introduction to Ekiti state.
I served in Otun-Ekiti when it was still part of Ondo state. A fellow "corper" and I decided we were going to visit all the Ekiti towns. Of course we didn't accomplish our goal mainly because there are so many and we were very broke. Also back then the roads were really bad and public transport was by the tiniest buses I'd ever seen, so quite painful. We stayed with fellow corpers which wasn't always convenient. In the end we only went to about 10 and I'm not counting the towns we just travel through on our way to the next stop. People couldn't understand why we would waste our time and money travelling around rural communities. At the end of the year when I mentioned what I'd been doing, I was informed I could have made it official and had a government funded travel log that future corpers could use. Such a missed opportunity. Sorry for the long story, your video just brought back memories.
