A non-governmental organization (NGO) has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and the Punjab government, urging a ban on the use of plastic materials during the General Elections 2024 campaign.
In its appeals, the NGO argued that the use of plastic materials, banners, and panaflex would contribute to increased pollution. Considering the upcoming elections in 2024, the organization expressed concern that millions of panaflex and banners would be utilized by the candidates.
Stressing that this would result in the use of millions of tons of plastic during the election campaign, the NGO called for a ban on such materials. It suggested the formulation and implementation of a policy to prohibit the use of plastic in election campaigns.
On January 16, the ECP completed all preparations for the polling scheduled for February 8 for the National and Provincial assemblies.
ECP Spokesperson Syed Nadeem Haider, in a statement to state-run TV, encouraged the general public to exercise their voting rights on polling day. The spokesperson noted that election symbols had been allocated to contesting candidates, and the printing of ballot papers was set to commence.
Syed Nadeem Haider also mentioned the establishment of monitoring cells at the provincial level and the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad to ensure the implementation of the election Code of Conduct.
