Awka is the capital city of Anambra state Nigeria, the city was declared capital on 21st August 1991 after the creation of Anambra and Enugu state.
Awka is located at 123.7 miles (199.1 kilometers) by road directly north of Port Harcourt in the centre of the densely populated Igbo heartland in south east Nigeria. The city has an estimated population of 301,657 as of 2006 census and over 2.5 million as of 2018 estimate.
Awka is located midway between two major cities in northern Igboland of Onitsha and Enugu. The west-east federal highway links Lagos, Benin, Asaba, Onitsha and Enugu to Awka and several roads links it to other important towns such as Oko, Ekwulobia, Agulu, Enugwu-Ukwu, Abagena and Nnewi.
The city is the traditional home of the Igbo blacksmiths, early broze artifacts have been discovered in the vicinity and the town’s artisans are still noted for their metal working and wood carving.
