Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso Agree to Form 2027 Merger Party – Utomi

As the 2027 general elections loom on the horizon, key political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso have reportedly reached a consensus to establish a formidable political coalition, according to political economist Professor Pat Utomi. In an exclusive interview with Channels Television, Prof. Utomi sheds light on the motivations behind this alliance and reflects on the shortcomings of previous political endeavors in Nigeria.

The prospective merger involves prominent parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). The aim is to create a transformative political entity capable of challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Professor Utomi emphasizes that the current political landscape lacks true parties focused on serving the interests of the Nigerian people. He argues that since 1999, political platforms have primarily served as tools for power acquisition, rather than mechanisms for improving citizens’ quality of life.

The interview delves into the failures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Prof. Utomi’s perspective. He contends that the APC’s founders faced internal resistance and did not genuinely intend for the party to address the needs of the Nigerian populace.

Responding to questions about his past support for Peter Obi and the Labour Party in 2023, Prof. Utomi clarifies that it was a strategic move to demonstrate an alternative within the existing system. However, he expresses a determination to create a new political party with a clear agenda, values, and policies, aiming for transparent governance and accountability.

When asked about the potential presidential candidate for the new party, Prof. Utomi deflects the question, emphasizing the need to first establish the party’s values, policies, and national strategy.

The interview also touches on Prof. Utomi’s friendship with Bola Tinubu and dismisses speculations about aligning with him in the 2027 elections. Instead, Prof. Utomi advocates for a focus on building a political party that prioritizes the collective well-being of Nigerians over electoral circus.

Prof. Utomi affirms that the merger involves not only political figures but also leaders of social movements and the labor movement, emphasizing a commitment to values that can drive progress in the country.
