AFCON Final Ticket: Peter Obi Hails Super Eagles’ Great Fighting Spirit

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Labour Party (LP) Flag bearer in the February 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has congratulated the Super Eagles for their “great fighting spirit” and determination in reaching the finals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.

Excited over Nigeria’s 4-2 victory over South Africa in the penalty shootouts, Obi wrote on his X handle, formerly Twitter; “Today was yet another victorious outing for Nigeria as our National Team, the Super Eagles displayed great fighting spirit, beating the Bafana Bafana of South Africa to take Nigeria to the finals”.

The former Anambra State Governor praised the team’s “professionalism, patriotism and high energy level”, saying that the performance so far fully demonstrates their readiness to win the AFCON trophy.

He further said in his statement; “I congratulate them, and our dear nation for this victory, while appreciating everyone who has contributed to our victorious journey so far”.

The LP Candidate, while looking ahead to the Sunday’s final taking place at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, known also as the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe, expressed hope that the country would unite behind the Super Eagles to emerge the continental champions for the fourth time.

According to him; “As we prepare for the finals, and get ready to lift the trophy together, we remain hopeful that, together as one, we will lift the banner of unity, peace, and progress in the New Nigeria we look forward to”.

“Nigeria is a great nation with great people”, he posited

Meanwhile, having stood out all through the semi-final encounter, including his impressive showing of saving two kicks during the penalty shootouts, Super Eagles’ goaltender, Stanley Nwabali carted home the ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) on the night.

Nwabali, who plies his trade in South Africa for premier league side, Chippa United, is now looking forward to making history in the final clash against host nation, Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.
