AFCON 2023: ‘Money and bonuses are the last things on my mind’ admit Peseiro ahead of Equatorial Guinea clash

Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has taken a firm stance on the discussions surrounding salaries and bonuses in the build-up to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite reports that he is owed wages by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Peseiro remains unfazed and committed to his role, emphasizing the importance of on-field results over financial concerns.

Peseiro Prioritizing Success Over Salary

Peseiro, who took charge of the Super Eagles two years ago, has a history of dealing with unpaid wages. His previous stint in Venezuela ended amidst controversies over unpaid salaries.

As the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draws near, the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, faces not just on-field challenges but also off-field distractions, particularly concerning social media.

Victor Moses, the former Chelsea winger and a retired Nigerian international, recently took to Twitter to express his support for Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.

Now, facing similar issues with the NFF, Peseiro has chosen not to focus on these matters publicly. He made it clear that his main concern is aiding the team’s improvement and not the ongoing talks about his salary and bonuses. 

He firmly believes that discussions about money should be secondary to achieving good results on the field.

AFCON Ambitions Unhindered by Financial Issues

As the Super Eagles prepare for their opening game against Equatorial Guinea in Ivory Coast, Peseiro’s commitment to his role and focus on the AFCON trophy is evident. 

Peseiro stated during his press conference, “Money and bonuses should be the last discussion, we need good results first. We all need money, but money is the last discussion. I don’t discuss my salary and bonuses with the media.” 

The Super Eagles will kickoff their 2023 AFCON journey against Equatorial Guinea by 3pm WAT on Sunday.
