CBS Unveils ‘NCIS: Origins,’ A Prequel Series Exploring Jethro Gibbs’ Early Life

CBS has unveiled its latest addition to the renowned NCIS franchise, a prequel series titled ‘NCIS: Origins.’ The new series is set to explore the early life of the iconic character Jethro Gibbs, who was originally embodied by Mark Harmon across a remarkable 19 seasons. Mark Harmon, in a dual role, will not only narrate ‘NCIS: Origins’ but also serve as its executive producer alongside his son Sean Harmon, known for his previous portrayal of Gibbs.

NCIS: Origins – A Journey Back in Time

‘NCIS: Origins’ promises to transport audiences back to Gibbs’ inception as a new special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office. The narrative will unfold under the watchful eye of NCIS legend Mike Franks, tracing Gibbs’ journey as he carves his place within a rugged team at the dawn of his law enforcement career. CBS is currently on the hunt for an actor to breathe life into the young Gibbs for the prequel.

Continuing the Legacy of NCIS

The announcement of ‘NCIS: Origins’ coincides with the upcoming premiere of the original NCIS series’ 21st season on February 12. All previous seasons of the show are now accessible for streaming on Paramount+. The NCIS franchise, conceived by Donald P. Bellisario, has been a resounding success, spawning numerous offshoots including the recently launched ‘NCIS: Hawaii.’

Behind the Scenes

Besides the Harmon duo, the series will be executive produced by Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North. The idea for ‘NCIS: Origins’ was pitched to CBS Studios by Sean and Mark Harmon, reuniting North and Monreal after their decade-long stint as writers on ‘NCIS.’ The latest addition to the franchise, ‘NCIS: Origins’, is poised for the 2024-2025 broadcast season, further expanding the NCIS universe following its first international spin-off, ‘NCIS: Sydney.’
