How the River Spirit Saved the Village: A Tiv Tale

Ethnic Origin: Tiv

Full Story

Long ago, in a Tiv village nestled by the banks of a mighty river, the people lived in harmony with nature. The river was their lifeline, providing water for their crops, fish for their meals, and a place to cool off during hot days. They believed the river was guarded by a benevolent spirit who watched over them, ensuring their prosperity and safety.

One year, however, a severe drought struck the land. The river began to dry up, and the villagers grew desperate. Crops withered, and the fish disappeared. The village elder called a council meeting and said, “We must seek the help of the River Spirit. Only she can save us.”

Led by the elder, the villagers prepared offerings of kola nuts, yams, and palm wine. They gathered at the riverbank and sang songs of supplication, calling upon the River Spirit to hear their pleas. Suddenly, the river began to glow, and a shimmering figure emerged from the water. It was the River Spirit, radiant and serene.

The spirit spoke, “I have heard your cries, but the river’s suffering is a result of neglect. You have taken from the river without giving back. To restore balance, you must plant trees along the banks and promise to protect the waters.”

The villagers vowed to honor the River Spirit’s request. They immediately began planting trees and cleaning the riverbank. As they worked, the skies darkened, and rain began to fall. The river swelled, filling with fresh water and fish. The villagers rejoiced, knowing they had been forgiven.

From that day onward, the Tiv people held an annual festival to honor the River Spirit, celebrating the harmony between humanity and nature.

Moral of the Story
