Following Kevin McCarthy’s ouster as House speaker, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are scrambling to decide on a new leader. Currently, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., has taken over as temporary speaker, but an election for a permanent replacement will be held next week. NBC News’ Julie Tsirkin explains how the process will develop.

IIUC the gop needs to have solidarity on the vote for speaker or else they cant overcome a dem no vote. How does anyone expect them to come together after this fiasco? The count is 221 gop and 212 dem. So if dems vote no as a block they only need 5 gop to vote no in order to stop any new speaker.

I'm not defending McCarthy or blaming dems for holding his past actions in contempt, merely pointing out that sometimes there's a "poverty of imagination" re how much worse things could get (choosing least of multiple "evils"). In "the before times", ousting an unacceptable political leader would open that position for a better replacement, and ousting McCarthy would be the right thing to do. Alas, I fear that Jordan (or an interim Trump … w/his trials possibly deferred) will be far more dangerous.
