Short term horrible response: Bombing gaza for weeks before sending in the ground forces is a stupid decision to make because you are killing more civilians than terrorists by default.

Medium term appropriate response: Sending in the ground forces to take out Hamas is an appropriate response to your citizens being killed.

Long term horrible response: Not planning on occupying the gaza strip is a bad decision because what is stopping from another terrorist organization replacing hamas in the future thus rendering the Israeli soldiers sacrifice as meaningless or even preventing more death on both sides in the future.

Overall: When you are attacked first you have to respond but it is mandatory that you only focus on the group or organization that killed your people and doing your best to minimize civilian deaths in the process while also occupying the territory so that future terror cells can not take over.
