I'm not against the attacks specifically (we don't know enough about them) but it seems a stretch to call them self defense. It's more like they were done to motivate then to back off. When they call it retaliation, it undermines the "self defense" label. It's reminiscent of Bush II's "pre-emptive" attacks.
