Rivers State Governor Fubara Faces Power Struggle with State Assembly

The political landscape in Rivers State is currently ablaze with controversy as Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent appointments have sparked a conflict with the State Assembly. The Assembly has declared these appointments “illegal,” deepening the existing political tensions in the state. The contentious appointments include Mr. Goodlife Ben as Acting Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Dr. Mrs. Ine Briggs as Acting Director-General of the Bureau for Public Procurement, and Mr. Tonte Davies as Acting Administrator of the New Cities Development Authority.

The State Assembly, particularly Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, criticised the appointments, highlighting inconsistencies with relevant establishment laws and condemning the appointment of an acting administrator for the New Cities Development Authority, a body not recognised by any state legislation.

This clash follows the recent move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to override Governor Fubara and pass four new bills into law after the governor declined assent to them. The Assembly justified this action by citing Section 100, Subsection 5, claiming that the governor’s assent was not required for the passage of these bills into law.

In a further development, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a warrant for the arrest of Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to Governor Fubara, over his alleged involvement in the burning of the State House of Assembly. Ehie, the immediate past Speaker of the Assembly, along with five others, was ordered to be arrested for their alleged participation in criminal activities.

Meanwhile, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt granted Edison Ehie’s ex-parte motion to prevent the Nigerian Police from arresting, detaining, or harassing him for his alleged role in the State House of Assembly explosion. The court has adjourned the case to February 6th, 2024, for a hearing of the substantive application. The political drama in Rivers State continues to unfold, raising questions about the separation of powers and the nature of political power struggles in the region.
