Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday, called on African Countries to practice a form of democracy which he described as Afro democracy.

Obasanjo made the comment during a two-day event, organised by the Africa Progress Group, in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital. He also called on African countries to discard the liberal democracy introduced to the continent by Western countries.

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also supported Obasanjo’s stance. At a media parley in Abuja, Obi stated that democracy is not universal, and that Nigeria must adopt the type of democracy that suits its society.

He also reiterated that he is not desperate to be the president of Nigeria, but is desperate to see Nigeria work.

In Abia state, the Governor of the state Alex Otti has come under fire after a report alleging that he spent the sum of N927million naira within three months on refreshments, meals, settlement of honorarium, allowances and welfare packages began circulating online.

The news is coming after a report titled Abia State Third Quarter 2023 Budget Performance was posted on the state government’s website.

Further breakdown of the budget also revealed that 737 million Naira was spent to buy vehicles, while 362 million Naira was spent on the purchase of trucks, and another N400 million naira on the purchase of buses.

The report however showed that only N25 million Naira was spent by the government for the renovation of public schools in the state.

In Enugu State, a video showing a truck stuck in mud, and effectively blocking a crucial route while plying the Nsukka/Enugu expressway has made rounds on social media.

In the video, commuters could be heard calling on the federal government to come to their aid.

  1. They are discussing changing democracy while there is a sitting president. Don't you think they have also considered military coup? They already have the experience to train the soldiers in secret service. My royalties are finally waking up to take over Africa our destiny . Watch our global leadership style to see if we are not better than the British.

  2. It's not in the DNA of the bl*ck man to love one another unconditionally. The problem is not in the name or system of government. Rather, it has to do with the mind set. The ordinary man or woman on the street is deceitful, unreliable and desperately wicked.

  3. Some tribes generally eat so much compared to others.
They dont see it as an issue.
Feeding generally costs a lot of money, we all know this, but then, dont use tax payers money.
Lets see if they eat that much.

  4. When Obasanjo was on the seat power, what did he do in promoting Democracy? Turning National Assenly members to be the most corrupt organization in order to have his way? Removing any judge/Inec officials/Office holder that stand against him? Obasanjo is just a hypocrite who got the most opportunity to make Nigera great but choose to serve his personal interest.

  5. The problem with what Rufai is saying is that it amounts to disregarding the message because it is not coming from the best person. So what? Address the need for a democracy which matches the exact demands of the Nigerian people and not just the liberal democracy. The question is remains whether President OBJ made some strong points or not

  7. Obasanjo has no moral standing to say anything

he brought thieves who looted during his tenure

to cap it all he began corrupting institutions to pave way for his 3rd term

all he did we havnt recovered till date

  8. Whether it is called Afro Democracy or Home grown Democracy, there is a consensus that what we currently practice have failed to give to us the desired succour.
With due respect, a certain Rev'd Chris Okotie have been advocating the concept of Aboriginal Democracy, tailored to suit our peculiarities. He called it the TOKO option. Let us begin to interrogate this option.
President Obasanjo and Mr. Peter Obi are now echoing same sentiments.
We must look inwards and develop a working democratic norm to rein in the failures of this so called invention, one we have all agreed do not enjoy universal acceptability and applicability.

  9. I like how you all talk. Thank you sirs and madams. However under the rules of Afro democracy do you think all this transparency shall effect positive change?? I think not. We shall all be shown the evidences of corruption and decadence until the inevitable implosion by the desperate destitute who have nothing else to lose occurs.

  10. Democracy of no accountability and, the decades of mismanagement and, curruption of political office holders are above the law and, their economic deprivation of the nationals were never called out or never subject to legal action. I beg lts stop this Grammar, ppl are suffering and dying on the streets every day and, crimes have infested our society and, institutions so bad that it has become the normal and, business as usual then, What are we talking about ?
