Nigeria’s players say they won’t boycott their World Cup opener as the dispute with their federation over being paid tournament bonuses continues.

The Super Falcons face Canada in Melbourne on Friday (21st July), with matches to follow against co host Australia and Ireland in Group B.

Ranked 40th in the world, Nigeria have been to all nine editions of the Women’s World Cup but will need some surprising results to reach the knockout stage for the third time in team history.

Led by coach Randy Waldrum, an American who is currently the head coach of Pittsburgh’s women’s team, Nigeria gained confidence with wins over Costa Rica, Haiti and New Zealand in their last three matches.

Nigeria Rugby Coach Steve Lewis is hoping to add more local-based players in the national team in the near future as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Mauritius this weekend on June 24 and 25.
The Black Stallions are currently holding a training camp in London with the squad filled with mostly players based in the United Kingdom.

Two home-based players Jatto Onoru-Oyiza of Cowrie RFC and Etim Gabriel John of Barewa RFC, Kano are expected to join the team today after arriving from Nigeria with NRFF General Manager Azeez Ladipo.
Lewis stated that training abroad is the best option for now as Nigeria is just returning to competitive action after getting suspended by World Rugby. The Scotsman however wants training camps to happen in some of the major Nigerian cities.
Lewis also believes the team can improve rapidly despite lack of competitive action and can be among the three teams that will qualify for the Africa Cup Sevens in Zimbabwe in September.
Other countries taking part in the pre-qualifier include Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mauritius, Cote d’Ivoire, Botswana, Cameroon, Algeria, Lesotho, Senegal and Egypt.

The Nigeria Football Federation has commended the Flying Eagles for giving a good account of themselves at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina.

Ladan Bosso’s team delivered quite an impressive performance at the tournament, beating host country and six-time champions Argentina 2-0 in the round of 16 before losing 1-0 to Korea Republic in the quarter-final.

NFF’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi on Monday said that the Flying Eagles gave their best at the world cup, adding that they did not disgrace the country in anyway.

Sanusi said: “The Flying Eagles have done their very best. I can say they have not disgraced Nigeria. In every competition, there has to be a winner and there has to be a time when some teams will be eliminated. Yesterday, it wasn’t our day. The team played very well but the goals refused to come. So, I think we should take it in good faith and move forward.”

“We want to say we are sorry to Nigerians who believed in the team that they could go all the way. Going by their progression and improvement from match to match, Nigerians expected us to defeat the Koreans. But as I said earlier, it was the wish of God.”

The FIFA U-20 World Cup will continue on Thursday with Uruguay facing Israel in the semi-final while Korea battle Italy in the other semi-final fixture.
