We lost the match from the bench sadly, as we refused to learn from the lessons of first match.
✳️GOALKEEPING
23 shots and 6 on target with Amaka conceding only one shows she is Africa’s Best and sits at Top 3 in the World. She deserves all the flowers.
✳️DEFENCE
✅️Ohale – Rock of Gibraltar and Demehin- Ms. Dependable were rock solid as expected.
✅️Michelle would have done better if only she was more calm to time her tackles well and did better with ball distribution. Not the best of her on the night.
✅️Okeke was the reason Esther Okoronkwo and Toni Payne couldn’t do much.
✅️Nicole Payne showed us how to tweak the defence for maximum output but Coach stuck to Okeke for reasons best known to him.
Unfortunately, the unjust call on Demehin (unharshly) shoving the Spanish gave them the lead. Weird and unfair call from the referee but it is what it is.
✳️MIDFIELD
✅️Deborah “Kante” Abiodun added another feather to her cap by earning an additional award – Best in Clearing and Forwarding on the night. Exceptional play coupled with an intimidating football acumen, garnished with positional intelligence shows she is pure class and well positioned for the next CAF awards.
✅️Ucheibe was the Midfield Generalissimo, with blocks enough to start a block industry. She was a Trojan as expected. Spain won’t forget her in a hurry.
✅️Payne did more of defending than her main duties, which ensured creativity in the midfield was almost non-existent.
✳️FORWARDS
✅️Rasheedat Ajibade missed a seater that got everyone talking though it would seem as though she got pushed and lost balance. She has been the most dangerous and passionate on the pitch; scoring that goal should have crowned her the MVP easily. It was just a not too good day for Captain Fantastic
✅️Asisat Oshoala gave flashes of what made her one of the Best in the World but the defensive style of play took from her, rather than allow her. I don’t think she should have been taken out, no,not for Ihezuo. Once Asisat was out, the collective team efficiency dropped.
✅️Esther Okoronkwo kept us believing a goal was coming but sadly, she picked a strain and had to be taken out. I also don’t think we got the the best replacement for her and of course it became evident as we progressed.
I’m not a fan of permutations as our destiny is no longer in our hands. So against Japan, I will only be watching to analyze and watch out for the team’s progress.
For now, the ladies should rest and rejuvenate whilst having fun.
