Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the most recent general elections, has comforted the relatives of those killed in Monday night’s building collapse in an Onitsha market.

In a press release issued by his media advisor, Mr. Valentine Obineme, Obi conveyed his condolences for the deceased while imploring the public to carefully follow construction and engineering codes for everyone’s safety.

About 20 people were rescued after a block of still-under-construction stores in Onitsha’s Ochanja Market fell on Monday night, killing roughly six people.

“If we adhere to standards and procedures, I firmly believe that building collapses will be a thing of the past,” said Obi. Building projects should only be handled by qualified, licensed, and experienced workers, and the materials used must match project requirements.

He expressed his sorrow at the senseless deaths and injuries caused by the tragedy, highlighting the fact that the victims were regular people just trying to get by.

He thanked everyone who helped free the stranded people and urged the state administration to look into what caused the fall.
