WINTER YOUTH OLYMPICS : IOC PRESIDENT COMMENDS NIGERIA’S SPORTS MINISTER

President of the International Olympic Committee, IOC, Thomas Bach has commended the visionary leadership of Nigeria’s Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh.

Mr. Bach gave the commendation during a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea.

Mr. Bach commended Senator Enoh for his dedication and commitment to sports development in Nigeria describing the Minister’s presence at the Winter Youth Games as a demonstration of his hands-on approach and personal commitment to fostering the growth of sports in the country.

The IOC President acknowledged the Minister’s efforts in promoting sports at the international level and recognized his tireless commitment to creating opportunities for young athletes.

In his response, Senator Enoh expressed gratitude to the IOC President for his leadership in orchestrating preparations for the 2024 Olympics.

The Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration and global cooperation in ensuring the success of major sporting events and emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to contributing actively to the Olympic movement.

He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to promoting the values of the Olympic movement and fostering the development of sports on both national and international platforms.

The discussions between the two officials also bordered on strategic preparations for the upcoming 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

This year’s Paris Olympics will run from 26 July to 11 August while the Paralympics will hold between 28 August and 8 September 2024.

Nigeria first participated in the Olympic Games in 1952, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the boycotted 1976 Summer Olympics due to the refusal of the IOC to sanction New Zealand rugby team who toured an apartheid South Africa.

Nigerian athletes have won 27 medals at the Olympics made up of 3 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze mostly in athletics and boxing.

For the Paralympic Games, the country made her debut at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona when it sent a delegation of six men to compete in track & field, powerlifting and table tennis.

Nigeria has remarkably won 80 medals at the Paralympics made up of 40 Gold, 19 Silver and 21 bronze medals.
