Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation has won the ”Best Non Governmental Organisation (NGO)” award for its campaign on Wikipedia in Nigeria.
Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation is an affiliate of Wikimedia Foundation, San Francisco and the owner of Wikipedia, the world’s largest online encyclopedia.
The President of Wikimedia Nigeria, Mr Olushola Olaniyan, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the campaign featured a blend of old and young actors in Nigeria’s film industry.
Olaniyan said that Peter Edochie (Okonkwo of Things fall Apart) led one of the story lines, while the other was led by Emmanuella of Mark Angel Comedy.
He said that the campaign told the story of the usefulness of Wikipedia as database for all knowledge that could be used by the old and young ones freely.
“Within a spate of three months, the campaign was viewed by record-breaking 17 million viewers across all social media platforms,’’ Olaniyan said.
He said that the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation started as Wikimedia User Group in Nigeria in the year 2015 as an affiliate of Wikimedia Foundation, San Francisco, and the owner of Wikipedia the world largest online encyclopedia that anyone could edit.
Olaniyan said that the user group got its NGO status in Nigeria in the year 2018 and the foundation had organised many outreach programmes to promote Wikimedia projects in Nigeria.
“Through its numerous programmes, over 300 Nigerian students were exposed to the use of Wikipedia as a digital inclusion tool for content creation, under Wiki Fan Club.
“The clubs were established in five universities across the country to teach Nigerian students how to contribute to Wikipedia.
“The foundation has trained over 100 Nigerian women on the use of Wikipedia for content creation, as a way of empowering Nigerian women through digital inclusion mechanism.
“The foundation also led a project to improve content creation about African Cinematography on Wikipedia,’’ he said.
Olaniyan said that the foundation was given the award by Communication Director- a magazine for corporate communications and public relations at its African Excellence Awards.
The African Excellence Awards had been celebrating the achievements of communication professionals for the past 10 years.
The awards were contested for by many media professionals under the following nomination categories: Campaign and Idea of the Year, Campaign and Idea of the Year (small budget), Agency of the Year, and Communications Team of the Year.
