Nigeria’s election marred by suppression, vote buying

0

United States authorities on Thursday alleged that Nigeria’s 2023 general election was marred by different irregularities.

US Department of State in a report on human rights practices said instances of voter suppression and violence were targeted at specific ethnic groups during the Nigerian election.

It said independent observers documented reports of vote buying, campaigning at polling stations, lack of ballot secrecy, and violence during the presidential, legislative, and state-level elections.

“National elections were widely reported to have reflected the will of voters, despite technical and logistical difficulties, and some irregularities,” the report said.

“Many independent observers assessed the results of the presidential, legislative, and state-level elections during the year reflected the will of voters, despite reports of voter suppression and vote buying, campaigning at polling stations, lack of ballot secrecy, violence, and intimidation.”

The report also details alleged intimidation tactics employed by supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the March 18 state election in Lagos State.

It also claimed that APC allegedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas, noting that these areas heavily favoured Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, an Igboman.

“During the March 18 state election in Lagos, All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters reportedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas, which Labour Party presidential candidate and ethnically Igbo Peter Obi won in the February 25 national election. Viral videos on social media showed APC supporters in Ojo threatening to attack ethnic Igbo voters presumed to be pro-Obi,” it added.

According to the report, a similar incident also emerged from Eti-Osa, where journalists were attacked and polling stations were shut down, allegedly preventing non-Yoruba voters from participating.

The report also attributed intances of property destruction and physical obstruction of voters in Amuwo-Odofin to APC supporters.

Citing videos posted on social media during the election, the report said police officers witnessed the attacks on voters but failed to intervene.

It added that there was no evidence that the perpetrators of these irregularities have been arrested or prosecuted.

Nigeria – U.S. Report Alleges APC Voter Suppression in Lagos Governorship Election

In its ‘2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria,’ the U.S. Government alleges that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Bola Tinubu, orchestrated voter suppression tactics in Igbo-dominated areas of Lagos during the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

The report claims that APC supporters intimidated and hindered Igbo voters from casting their ballots, favoring incumbent governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s reelection bid over Labour Party candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Instances of violence, voter intimidation, and attacks on journalists were cited, with reports indicating that APC supporters in Ojo threatened to assault ethnic Igbo voters, and in Eti-Osa, they obstructed non-Yoruba voters from accessing polling stations.

Furthermore, the report highlights videos on social media depicting police officers failing to intervene in electoral malpractices. These allegations raise significant concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the protection of voters’ rights in Nigeria.

Care For The Poor, Obi Urges Wealthy Nigerians

0

Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate Peter Obi, has called on affluent Nigerians to increase their support for the less privileged, particularly in the provision of water and education.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Obi highlighted that 70 percent of Nigeria’s wealth is controlled by about one percent of the population, emphasizing that if even a fraction of these wealthy individuals directed their resources towards meeting the basic needs of the poor, significant improvements could be made.

He urged governments at all levels to prioritize resource allocation aimed at enhancing the living conditions of the impoverished and lifting them out of poverty.

Obi shared insights from his recent humanitarian visits to various regions, expressing concern over the dire situation faced by many Nigerians, especially in rural areas.

To address the immediate water needs of the poor, Obi announced the completion of ten boreholes in several Northern states, advocating for similar initiatives from wealthy Nigerians to tackle water scarcity.

In the realm of education, Obi underscored the potential he observed among almajiri children in Quranic schools in the North, stressing the importance of providing adequate support to nurture their talents and contribute to national development.

He emphasized the need for a concerted effort to alleviate poverty and enhance education, stating that these measures are crucial for addressing the root causes of insecurity and other societal challenges.

Regarding infrastructure development, Obi asserted that his administration would prioritize fixing existing roads before embarking on new projects, emphasizing the importance of ensuring connectivity across the country.

Responding to criticisms about his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, Obi defended his record, citing significant improvements in education and overall development during his tenure. He argued that his focus was on revitalizing existing infrastructure and enhancing the quality of education rather than constructing new facilities.
