‘Careless, unguarded, embarrassing comment,’ ADF carpets Umahi over anti Obi comments

0

…vows to hold Igbo leaders accountable

The Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), has berated David Umahi, the Minister of Works over what it described as careless, unguarded, embarrassing comment against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last presidential election.

Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State had accused Obi of inciting the Igbo against the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu, following his criticism of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

The ADF in a statement on Friday by Chukwuemeka Obinwugo, its Publicity Secretary, rebuked the minister, noting that no right thinking Igbo can make such careless unguarded embarrassing comment, much less a representative of the Igbo nation in government

The organisation noted that it wished to make it “glaringly clear to all and sundry that Alaigbo and Nd’Igbo will no longer stomach the politics of Igbo against Igbo. This smacks of lack of respect for the land and the people.”

It continued, “By the Nigerian Constitution and governance policy, positions are given to persons to reflect the character of the Federation, that is to say, persons occupying offices, especially at the Federal level, do so on the anchor and basis of the land/state they come from, thus translating to the people they represent on whose behalf they hold such offices.

“Instances abound and well known to Nd’Igbo, of our elected and appointed representatives taking positions or speaking on national issues in ways and manners that are obviously against the existential interests of Nd’Igbo and even so, very embarrassing to them.

“It’s only among Igbos in government that you hear the kind of statement recently credited to the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, speaking on the demolition of the multi-billion Landmark complex. He was reported to have said that Peter Obi is inciting Igbos.”

The ADF said Umahi’s remarks were irresponsible, stating that, “No right thinking Igbo can make such careless unguarded embarrassing comment, much less a representative of the Igbo nation in government. We shall no longer ignore or permit such carelessness among our people in government.

“The ADF will henceforth hold such adverse representatives accountable for their actions and words as it concerns Nd’Igbo. Igbos deserve respect from those who represent them in any capacity in government and will demand no less, going forward.

“It is such anti-people comments and actions of our sons and daughters in government that create the wrong impressions that Igbos are not united, that Igbos are sellouts, that Igbos love money more than anything, that Igbos can easily be shortchanged in public administration in Nigeria, amidst such similar negative profiling, nationally and globally.

“Our representatives and leaders in government should begin to realize in practical terms that sovereignty resides in the people and they in government are indeed public, that is, people’s service providers. They should not demarket or degrade us and our cherished values any longer at the alter of ‘good boyism’ in government. Enough is enough!”

Landmark Beach refunds customers after demolition

0

The management of Landmark Resort Beach says it has initiated the refund process for customers impacted by the recent demolition of portions of its properties by the Federal Government.

According to a statement posted on its X account on Friday by Landmark Africa, the parent company of Landmark Resort Beach, refunds are being facilitated through the Landmark Citizen App.

While acknowledging the patience of their customers, the management advised that completion of the refund process may be delayed due to the high number of requests.

“Dear Landmark Citizens, we would like to assure you all that we have started issuing refunds to those who requested a refund of their money on the Landmark Citizen App.

“Please be patient with us, due to the volume of requests, this process will take some time. Be rest assured that all refund requests will be processed,” the statement read.

A portion of Landmark Beach on Victoria Island, Lagos, was demolished on Monday to accommodate the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

Minister of Works, David Umahi has defended the demolition, citing that the Landmark centre encroached upon the Federal Government’s right-of-way.

The Breeze Beach Club, Mami Chula and other beach businesses were also demolished in the process.

“We’re Constructing N15trn Lagos/Calabar Coastal Road With Fear Of God”-Umahi

0

Dave Umahi, The Minister of Works, says the federal government is approaching the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road with the fear of God.

The minister made this known on Wednesday in Lagos during an interaction with stakeholders and those affected by the multi-billion construction project.

Umahi spoke amidst the trenchant criticism that has greeted the project, particularly the cost which has been described to be over inflated.

Top opposition figures in the country such as the PDP Presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP say the project is not a priority at this time.

The LP candidate, Obi, has demanded that the project be jettisoned in the interest of Nigeria due to the humungous funds needed for its construction. The project, according to the government will cost close to N13 trillion.

Atiku on his part has lamented the huge job loses that will result from the project. No fewer than 20,000 people are expected to the thrown into the labour market as a result of the construction, according to checks.

Speaking yesterday at the second meetings with stakeholders, Umahi said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that the project work be done with “the fear of God.”

According to him, the federal government has ensured fairness to all that are concerned, particularly people whose property are affected by the road construction.

Umhai said: “Mr President says that this development must have two factors. One is the fear of God, and the second is the human face, and that’s what we have tried to do.

“Since we came on Thursday, we have been going through the route every day from morning to about 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. We’ve made hard decisions. In some cases, we have followed the gazetted routes. In other cases, we have realigned to the coastal line, majorly. And the coastal line from the shore, 250 metres by the Supreme Court judgment, belongs to the federal government.

“I talk in particular about Landmark. There is none of his infrastructure that is affected. I agree that there are some people he subleased the place to, but the shoreline was never given to him by the Oniru family. These people he sublet to, he erected some caravans, makeshifts, so on and so forth within the shoreline. So, we are dealing with these people who sublet the shoreline illegally.”

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road: Shoreline never belonged to Landmark

0

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has said that the shoreline affected by the Lagos-Calabar coastal road never belonged to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Landmark Africa Group, Paul Onwuanibe.

According to Arise TV, Mr Umahi spoke at the second meeting with parties affected by the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, which was held on Wednesday in Lagos.

The planned infrastructure is designed to link the former capital city to Calabar, a port city near the border with Cameroon.

Landmark sits along the Atlantic Ocean beachfront in Lagos’s affluent Victoria Island area.

Some Landmark Beach Resort employees also protested the beach’s sand filling.

“The shoreline never belonged to Landmark; the owner, Onwuanibe, sublet it to people illegally,” the works minister said, insisting that Mr Onwuanibe’s infrastructure was unaffected.

Mr Umahi said the Landmark owner is “playing politics with politicians,” adding that “there is nothing to claim.”

These people he sublet to, he erected some caravans, makeshifts, so on and so forth within the shoreline. So, we are dealing with these people who sublet the shoreline illegally,” Mr Umahi said.

The minister challenged Landmark to provide documentation to lay claims to the shorelines.

“I have asked him to bring his documents. I challenge him and his co-politicians; let him flash the documents before the press,” he said.

Umahi chides Obi

Mr Umahi also addressed criticism of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi.

The former Anambra governor had described the demolition of structures for the project as “insensitive” and “heart-wrenching.”

“A similar scenario occurred when Peter Obi was governor and he made a statement. He said, ‘Any infrastructure that stands in the way of road construction must go and there will be no compensation paid.’ That’s what he said. But look at me, by the human face of the Renewed Hope Agenda administration, we are even paying for people that are illegally staying on the coastline and do not even have valid infrastructure and valid documents. That is mercy.

“You know some people counsel without knowledge. When you condemn people, you bring judgment upon yourself. And that’s what he has done,” the minister said.

Benefits of the coastal road

The works minister said that the coastal road will enable people to travel with ease.

“…anyone traveling from Sokoto to Lagos will do it in about 10 hours and traveling from south-east to Abuja will be a maximum of five hours. These are the benefits of the coastal road.

Dangote adbanner 728x90_2 (1)

He noted that the roads will be constructed with concrete pavement and will drive foreign investment into the country, which will in turn strengthen the Naira.

He also said that the coastal road will be an “evacuation corridor for the Lagos deep seaport.”
